Our New Team is Hitting New Heights

Thistle Underwriting is hitting new heights, reaching greater depths and promises it can take the heat, with the launch of two new and exciting products, along with the appointment of a brand new senior underwriting team.

We have widened our expertise and product offering further, building on the strength of our Liability portfolio.

This month sees the launch of our High Risk and Construction products. High Risk offers Liability insurance specifically designed for High Risk Contractors with a turnover of up to £5M. The scheme caters for many occupations requiring unlimited height restrictions such as scaffolding contractors or unlimited depth restrictions such as civil engineers. Contracting businesses using heat are not left out in the cold with welding contractors & hot roofers accepted.

The new Construction scheme is specifically designed for larger contractors and construction risks, with a turnover between £5M to £15M. Standard Employers and Public Liability covers can be combined with optional covers of Contractors All Risks, Terrorism, JCT 6.5.1 and Directors & Officers as well as Efficacy, Financial Loss, Cyber & Pollution Extensions.

Continued Development
Thistle has demonstrated its confidence in the success of its High Risk and Construction products by investing in a new team of highly skilled technical underwriters, solely dedicated to underwriting the two new schemes.
John Mason, our Underwriting Director explains: “The new team will be based with myself in Leeds, to enable the three of us to work very closely together to further enhance our service to brokers.

“Daniel Storr and Andrew Oddy both bring a wealth of Liability and Construction underwriting expertise and experience and I look forward to working with them in growing our High Risk and Construction accounts.
“This is the first step in our vision for continued development for Thistle Underwriting, with plans for further investment in both the team and our IT infrastructure this year along with the launch of more new products. It is a very exciting time for the company.”

John has over 30 years’ experience working in the Commercial Insurance industry including senior underwriting and management roles for Norwich Union, Lloyd’s syndicates and London Market Insurers.

Daniel Storr has been appointed Thistle’s Construction Underwriting Manager and is a high calibre underwriter whose experience includes over 30 years in underwriting. Daniel began his career at General Accident (subsequently Aviva) where he held various underwriting positions for over twenty years, when he then moved to Brit Insurance as Regional Liability Underwriter dealing with High Hazard Construction risks, a role he held for over five years.

Daniel’s most recent position was at Covea as Regional Lead Underwriter (North) where he held the highest level of authority in the region for Property and Liability and was a core member of the North Region Leadership Team.

Daniel comments: “I’m excited to be joining Thistle. The foundations are now in place for the next stage of our development. I’m looking forward to building on our excellent reputation with a new underwriting team and revised products that significantly expand our underwriting appetite. Whilst our list of target trades is wide I welcome discussions on individual risks which other insurers find hard to accommodate.”

Andrew Oddy has been appointed Senior Construction Underwriter and is an Insurance professional with wide experience of Insurer and broker operations, spanning over 30 years. Andrew has spent time working for Royal Insurance, NIG, Allianz, a large provincial broker and most recently for MGA’s.

His last position was at Broker Network where he spent over ten years, including three years as Senior Liability Underwriter which involved highly technical underwriting – predominantly in the construction sector – securing in excess of £4M new business in that time.
